Dimensioning Questions
Line conventions: An extension line in technical drawing is a thin, dark, solid line that extends from a feature to which a dimension refers, without touching the arrowheads. Confirm this definition.
Design for fit: When designing mechanical devices with mating parts, must the designer determine acceptable size variations (tolerances) to ensure proper fit and function?
Dimensioning rule: Should dimension lines be arranged so they do not cross extension lines, thereby keeping the drawing legible and uncluttered?
Dimensioning best practice: Should a drafter, whenever practical, apply dimensions to the view that shows the object’s true profile (true shape) so sizes are read directly and unambiguously?

Dimensional variation and tolerances When a finished part is measured after manufacturing, it may vary slightly from the exact nominal dimension specified on the drawing within the allowed tolerance range.
Dimensioning standards and responsibility The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) publishes widely used industry standards that govern the placement and presentation of dimensions on technical drawings.
Fillet radius notation When all fillets share the same size, it is acceptable to specify the fillet radii in a single general note (for example, “UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, ALL INTERNAL FILLETS R = 3”).
Placement of dimension text Is it acceptable to letter (place) a dimension value over any line on the drawing, including object and extension lines?
Respecting design intent If an engineer has placed dimensions in specific locations, does the drafter have the freedom to rearrange them as desired without authorization?
Staggering values on parallel dimension strings For a group of parallel dimension lines, the dimension values should be staggered to improve legibility and avoid crowding.
Purpose of dimensioning By adding dimensions to a technical drawing, the drafter communicates the size and the location/orientation of part features needed for manufacturing and inspection.
