In a pot, there is a mixture of milk and water in the ratio 4 : 5. If it is filled with an additional 8 litres of milk, the pot would be full and ratio of milk and water would become 6 : 5. Find the capacity of the pot?

Correct Answer: 22 lit

Explanation:

  • Let the initial quantity of milk = 4x liters
  • Let the initial quantity of water = 5x liters
  • Total initial mixture = 4x + 5x = 9x liters

After adding 8 liters of milk:

  • New quantity of milk = (4x + 8) liters
  • Quantity of water = 5x liters (remains unchanged)

According to the problem, the new ratio of milk to water is 6 : 5:

(4x + 8) / (5x) = 6 / 5

Solve for x:

5 * (4x + 8) = 6 * (5x)
20x + 40 = 30x
40 = 30x - 20x
40 = 10x
x = 40 / 10
x = 4

Initial quantities:

  • Initial milk = 4x = 4 * 4 = 16 liters
  • Initial water = 5x = 5 * 4 = 20 liters
  • Total initial mixture = 16 + 20 = 36 liters

Capacity of the pot:

  • The pot becomes full after adding 8 liters of milk.
  • Capacity = Total initial mixture + Added milk
  • Capacity = 36 + 8 = 44 liters

Answer: 44 liters
