    Explanation

    Conjugate law is below,

    Apply the law of algebra in above equation.
    Now, we have, a 2 + a -2
    = ( a + 1/a ) 2 - 2
    = ( 2 + ? 3 + 2 - ? 3) 2 - 2
    = (4) 2 - 2 = 16 - 2 = 14
