Global Recycling Day is held on 18th March every year, with an aim to change the mindset of governments, businesses, communities and individuals around the world, to see recyclables as resource - not waste.The theme for Global Recycling Day 2019 was "Recycling into the Future". It was created in 2018 to help recognize, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet.
The International Nurses Day was celebrated globally on May 12 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale also known as 'The Lady with the Lamp', was famous as manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War. The theme for the International Nurses Day 2019 is -'Nurses - A Voice to Lead -Health for All'. In 1860, Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of "Nightingale School of Nursing" at St Thomas' Hospital in London. It was the first secular nursing school in the world and is now part of King's College London.
3. World Earth Day observed on April 22. The theme of 2019 World Earth Day is;
On 22nd April 2009 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 22nd April as the "International Mother Earth Day". The term 'Mother Earth' implies the interdependent relationship which exists between all the species of planet earth and to acknowledge earth's role in sustaining them all. World Earth Day 2019 theme is 'Protect Our Species'. It will mainly focus on saving species which are on the verge of extinction due to climate change, deforestation, pollution and illegal poaching. The founder of the Earth Day was Gaylord Nelson.
The Fire Service Week is observed nation-wide from 14th April to 20th April. Since 1968, 14th April is observed every year as the National Fire Service Day in remembrance of the lives lost in the devastating fire that erupted and the explosions that followed on 14th April 1944 at freighter SS Fort Stikine at the Victoria Dock in Bombay Port. This year the National Fire Service Week was observed with a theme "Fire Prevention is better than Fire Fighting".
World Parkinsons Day is observed on 11th April. On April 11 2019, Apollo Hospitals launched an advanced centre for movement disorders in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It will offer medical and surgical treatment for patients affected by various movement disorders including Parkinson's Disease.The centre would offer Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries and other services to treat a wide spectrum of diseases such as Parkinson's Disease, cerebral palsy, dystonia, essential tremor, and intractable spasticity dyskinesia. Tremors, mainly on one side of the body, is the first manifestation of Parkinson's disease. The initial management requires multidisciplinary care including physiotherapy, neurological support, psychiatric counselling, and nutrition. Surgery could be considered when the symptoms cannot be adequately controlled by medical management. The centre would offer DBS in which electrodes are implanted in the brain.
