If 2x + 3y = 29 and y = x + 3, what is the value of x?

Correct Answer: 4

Explanation:

2x + 3y = 29 ...(i)
and y = x + 3 ...(ii)
Putting the value of y from Eq. (ii) to Eq. (i), we get
2x + 3y = 29
2x + 3(x + 3) = 29
2x + 3x + 9 = 29
⇒ 5x = 20
∴ x = 4
