  • Question
  • If a = (? 5 + 1) / (? 5 - 1) and b = (? 5 - 1) / ( ? 5 + 1) then the value of (a 2 + ab + b 2) / (a 2 - ab + b 2) is?

  • Options
  • A. 3/4
  • B. 4/3
  • C. 3/5
  • D. 5/3

  • Correct Answer
  • 4/3

    Explanation

    a = [(?5 + 1) / (?5-1)] x [(?5 + 1) / (?5 + 1)]
    = (?5 + 1)2 / (5 - 1)
    = (5 + 1 + 2 ?5) / 4
    = (3 + ?5) / 2

    b = [(?5 - 1) / (?5 + 1)] x [(?5 - 1 ) / (?5 -1)]
    = (?5 - 1 )2 / (5 - 1)
    = (5 + 1 - 2?5) / 4
    = (3 - ?5) / 2

    Now a2 + b2 = [(3 + ?5)2 + (3 - ?5)2] / 4
    = [2 x (9 + 5 )] / 4
    = 7

    ab = 1

    ? (a2 + ab + b2) / (a2 - ab + b2)
    = (7 + 1) / (7 - 1)
    = 8/6
    = 4 / 3
